Basil pesto is one of the most known Italian condiments for pasta. It originated in the Northern maritime region of Liguria and is traditionally made of only 5 ingredients: fresh Italian basil leaves, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic, and olive oil.

This version substitutes Parmesan cheese with vegan Parmesan cheese (I used a cheese block, but you can use it grated, as preferred) and pine nuts with hemp hearts.

Compared to pine nuts, hemp hearts have a higher amount of Omega-3, protein, and they are reach in magnesium, bringing a number of health benefits. Among other things, they reduce inflammation and muscle cramps, including PMS symptoms. You can think of this pesto as a healthy treat or a delicious medicine!

Hemp heart basil pesto can be prepared in only one step: just mix all the ingredients in a blender and you’re good to go!

Blend all the ingredients

Put all the ingredients into the blender’s cup and mix until you obtain a smooth consistency. Add a little olive oil to taste to adjust. Use immediately or store in a jar with a lid for up to one week.
